Artists have long used stencils as an expressive form. Blek le Rat, one of the earliest practitioners of stencil graffiti, developed his signature style while living in Paris after visiting New York.

A stencil is a paper, plastic, or metal sheet with perforations cut to leave designs when ink or paint is spread across it.

Before applying your stencil, spray lightly (don’t drench!) it with spray adhesive to reduce paint seepage and simplify removal later. Shake the can well and remist often for best results. For added safety on textured walls, blue painter’s tape might also come in handy for keeping it secure as it prevents shifting during painting; afterward, wash with warm water and soap to get rid of any residual adhesive residues.
