Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine

Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine at Florida Hospital focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons to restore your ability to move and function at optimal levels – whether at work or play. Our goal is to restore mobility so you can live life to the fullest extent.

Our physicians possess extensive experience treating sports injuries, arthritis, and trauma to the shoulder, hip, knee, foot, and ankle. When conservative treatments fail, they provide cutting-edge surgery procedures and techniques.

Dr. Jarrett is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder replacement, reconstructive surgery, rotator cuff repairs, tendon rupture repairs, and upper extremity fractures. In addition, he regularly participates in grant-funded research projects dedicated to treating rotator cuff injuries and shoulder arthritis.

Dr. Fortun is also the area’s only fellowship-trained Hip Arthroscopy provider, which allows him to treat common hip injuries, such as labral tears and impingement. Before attending medical school, Dr. Fortun spent six years as an orthopedic/sports medicine physical therapist, honed non-operative skills that have provided him with a unique advantage when treating injuries without surgery or post-operative needs of those that do require surgery.

Dr. Williams is an accomplished former collegiate athlete committed to orthopedic care for people of all ages. From weekend warriors to those competing at professional sporting levels, her patients range from weekend warriors and weekend warriors up to elite-level collegiate and experienced players. Dr. Williams takes great pleasure in helping patients return to pre-injury activity levels as quickly as possible.

Ashlee Hornick, PA-C, graduated with her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Lake Erie College and joined our Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine team in 2018. With this expertise, she specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of orthopedic conditions that affect all age groups; holistic approaches are utilized, including patient education/counseling sessions, assessment of footwear/posture/daily routine analysis, and ergonomics/fitness evaluation. Ashlee encourages her patients to move freely while exercising safely – she hopes she looks forward to working together!

Infusion Centers

Medication that cannot be administered orally is often given via infusion therapy. This includes antibiotics, cancer drugs, and other treatments administered using a needle or catheter into an IV vein. Furthermore, infusion can provide fluids such as salts and electrolytes that keep patients hydrated during treatment.

Wilmington Health’s Infusion Centers provide a safe, welcoming space to receive your prescribed treatment. Our highly skilled infusion teams specialize in collaborative medical and emotional care to promote healing and comfort for each client.

Silver Stream Lane’s infusion center allows patients to watch television or read during treatment. Ivira’s mission is to provide patient-centric care that enhances the quality of life during infusion medication administration; its commitment can be seen in its Care Compass program.

NHRMC will remain open until supplies run out to treat high-risk COVID-19 patients with monoclonal antibody injections that can lower risks by up to 70% when administered within ten days of the first symptoms of infection.

This facility will continue to accept Medicaid patients with a referral from their provider and those without insurance who meet financial criteria for the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program, offering free vaccinations against HPV for ages 11 through 26 through the Gardasil vaccine. Please call for more details.

Urology & Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery

Women seeking urological services at our center can benefit from medical management to minimally-invasive surgery and robotics solutions, from infections and overactive bladder to urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse to pelvic vestibulitis and dyspareunia (painful vagina). Additionally, we specialize in reconstructive genitourinary surgeries resulting from fistulas, strictures, or diverticulums in the urinary system.

SANDRA HALL is an experienced pelvic floor disorder and incontinence specialist and heads the urogynecology service within the Women’s Center of Excellence at WH Women. She provides personalized attention for those suffering from these conditions.

Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, or FPM-RS, is a joint subspecialty of gynecology and urology that treats the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues supporting the bladder, uterus, and vagina. While these conditions may be painful and embarrassing, our specialists use medications, exercises, surgical techniques, and other therapies to address them effectively.

Our urogynecologists possess advanced training in natural-tissue repairs without using synthetic materials to address issues related to pelvic floor, urethra, ureters, rectum, or bladder problems. These experts specialize in various surgical techniques, from open surgery to laparoscopic and robotic procedures, as well as managing neurogenic bladder symptoms caused by neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s. Hess and her associate are the only fellowship-trained urogynecologists within a 100-mile radius of Wilmington specializing in aviation medical exams for pilots. At the same time, Hess holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Dartmouth College, as well as her doctorate of urology and master of public health with clinical research credentials from Michigan.

Robotic Surgery

At Wilmington Health, our surgeons specialize in minimally invasive surgical techniques using smaller incisions that offer reduced pain and scarring, faster recovery time, and can sometimes shorten hospital stays. Minimally invasive surgery has proven invaluable for hernias, colon polyps, early cancers of the rectum and gallbladder, as well as numerous other conditions.

Wilmington Health has long been at the forefront of using robotic surgical technology. When they added the da Vinci XI robot to their ambulatory surgery center in 2021, Wilmington Health became one of the first non-hospital affiliated facilities in Southeastern North Carolina to use such technology.

With this technology, surgeons have more precise control of their movements, which may lead to reduced postoperative pain and recovery time as well as decreased use of opioid medications following surgery. Furthermore, the Ambulatory Surgery Center also offers outpatient surgery services for many procedures, eliminating the need to stay overnight and helping patients return more quickly to everyday routines.

Dr. Peter Santoro prepares to perform surgery on a groin hernia by listening to country music while conferring with nurses and anesthesiologists about his plan. After being briefed on what’s to be done, he sits almost 12 feet from the operating table before beginning with robotic technology called Intuitive’s $2.4 million automated system for surgery control.

Santoro is one of the few surgeons in Delaware and Philadelphia certified to use this advanced technology for hernia repair, specifically complex ventral hernias such as those he is currently treating. After seeing how significantly it decreased his patients’ hospital stays and use of pain medications post-surgery, he has become a strong supporter of it.

Santoro uses robotic surgery for a wide range of gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures, from hernia repair to removal of large polyps and early cancers in both colon and recto rectum, using trans anal surgical removal of the lower rectum (TAMIS) for hemorrhoids treatment, cancer, incontinence relief as well as surgeries such as removal of colon or gallbladder (cholecystectomy). He was the first general and bariatric surgeon in southeastern North Carolina to offer this minimally invasive TAMIS colonoscopy in 2021.
